How Things Get Made

The 7am Round

A single flagstick casts a long, thin shadow across a misty, dew-covered golf green in the soft morning light.

There's a specific quality to a golf course before 7:30am when nobody else is there.

It's not meditation. It's not mindfulness. It's closer to what happens when just enough of your brain is occupied - reading the green, choosing the club, managing the wind - that the rest of it is free to work on something else entirely. Sideways. Without pressure.

I've solved more design problems between the fourth and seventh hole than in any meeting room. Not by trying. By not trying. The solution arrives while you're thinking about your grip.

I think this is why I build the way I do. Not through grand strategy sessions or whiteboards covered in post-its. Through tinkering. Making something slightly better. Noticing the detail that's not quite right and fixing it before I can articulate why it mattered.

The best things I've ever made - courses, products, a good Sunday roast - were built in that register. Focused but not forcing. Paying attention to the thing in front of you and trusting that the bigger picture is forming somewhere in the background.
